September-Feast of St Teresa of Kolkata
2 Corinthians 9: 6-9
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever.”
Kolkata, the city of joy. A city that is known for the inspiring work of Mother Teresa that still continues today. A few years ago, I visited Kolkata to volunteer with the Missionaries of Charity sisters who follow in the footsteps of the now Saint Teresa of Kolkata.
More than one fifth of the population in Kolkata are living below the poverty line, yet it is called the city of joy. As I walked around the city, what I experienced above all else was joy and love. Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” No matter who you are or what possessions you have, everyone can show love in their actions no matter how small.
Prayer: Written on a wall in one of Saint Teresa’s Calcutta Children’s Homes
People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centred; forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies; succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you; be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight; create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous; be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten; do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough; give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.
