A selection of resources on the global debt crisis can now be found on Jesuit Missions’ website, as part of its ongoing campaigning on the issue.
It includes a top ten list of reasons why it is calling for debt cancellation for other countries, particularly when the UK is facing cuts to public spending.
There are also references to Pope Francis’s views on debt, a prayer from Jesuit priest Fr Charlie Chilufya and suggestions for further reading on the subject.
Crippling debt repayments have a seriously damaging effect on several developing countries, including many where Jesuit Missions works.
It has consistently called for those in the Global North to take action on this issue, including launching a digital letter writing campaign aimed at Prime Minister Keir Starmer during Lent.
This Jubilee year is a particularly relevant time to raise awareness around the impact of debt.
And, earlier this week, Jesuit Missions’ Director Paul Chitnis and Management Board Chairman Br Stephen Power SJ joined a multi-faith group outside the Treasury to take part in a vigil calling for an end to the debt crisis.
