A night to remember with Mount St Mary’s

  • 16 March 2018

Ten runners from Mount St Mary’s and Barlborough Hall schools, in Derbyshire, will be taking on the challenge of running the London Marathon for Jesuit Missions in 5 weeks time. Our Communications Officer, Stephanie, attended their charity ball on the 10th March to meet the runners and find out more about how their training is going.

She said, “It was a fantastic evening; very well organised with a three course dinner, waited on by the 6th form students, followed by a casino. A great opportunity for the runners to let their hair down, with just over a month to go until the big day.”

There are six teachers and four parents, including three couples and both headteachers,  in this year’s Mount St Mary’s (MSM) marathon team. Headmaster of MSM, Dr Nicholas Cuddihy, and his wife Grace are running it for the second time. Grace, a natural runner, knows she is behind with her training but is hoping to make it to the finish line with her husband.

“The charity ball is a great way to bring teachers and parents together for a special evening and really helps the team along with their fundraising. We will also be holding another fundraiser after the marathon in may,” Said Grace.

Dylan and Alex Campbell moved to the UK from South Africa last summer. Dylan coaches the boys 1st XV rugby team and looks after one of the boys boarding houses, while his wife Alex is a teacher at Barlborough Hall. The London marathon is new to both of them; however Dylan has previously run the ultra Comrades marathon which runs between his home city of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. This is the oldest and largest ultra marathon in the world. At 89km (56miles), it is over double a marathon distance. Alex is completely new to running and is “absolutely terrified”. She is looking forward to the three week Easter holidays coming up to “have the time to get some proper training done.”

They said “it’s great to be able to fundraise as part of the MSM team as it would be really difficult to fundraise on our own, with very little family and friends living locally in the UK.”

Johnathon and Tammy Johnson are parents of three children; two of whom attend MSM and Barlborough Hall. Tammy started running four years ago and each year receives a race entry for Christmas from her husband, who regularly competes in triathlons. Last year she took part in the Liverpool Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon as well as the Yorkshire half marathon. This year she said she is looking forward to running in the London with her husband, who was easily persuaded to run in a womble outfit after a few drinks on Saturday evening.

Speaking to the school chaplain, he said that some students have been making bracelets with flags of the countries that St Francis Xavier went to which will be sold for Jesuit Missions. He is also aiming to organise a sponsored students cross country race for the same day as the marathon.

Stephanie spoke at mass the next morning to the students and teachers about a few of the projects that this years runners will be supporting, including the Para Legal Programme in Darjeeling.
