Remembering Fr Victor-Luke Odhiambo SJ (1956-2018)

  • 19 November 2021
A mass was held to celebrate the life of Fr Victor SJ and remember his dream of education for all.

On 15th November 2021, Mazzolari Teachers College (MTC), together with the people of God in Cueibet; and the Jesuits of Daniel Comboni Jesuits Residence; held a mass to celebrate the life of Fr Victor-Luke Odhiambo, SJ who passed away on 15th November 2018.

The theme of the mass was Resurrection and Fr Ayaga reminded people that we are not celebrating the death of Fr Victor, but rather the life of Fr Victor and his exemplary love for the people of South Sudan.

At the end of the mass, Fr Kizito Busobozi, SJ, reminded people that the dream of Fr. Victor was to educate as many women as possible along with the men of South Sudan. Fr Kizito expressed that Fr Victor’s dream is now a challenge of the Jesuits to make sure that it is realised.

It is in this spirit that the Jesuits at the MTC have started a Secondary school in Fr Victor’s name; Fr Victor-Luke Odiambo Memorial School (VLOMS). Although currently the school is running mainly as a Secondary School it is open to adding vocational programs, such as tailoring, domestic science and carpentry.

VLOMS is just a new school which began in May 2021 with 164 students in Senior 1. Despite starting by studying under the tree, VLOMS hopes to develop all the necessary facilities to achieve the dreams of Fr Victor. So far, the school has a structure that serves as class rooms with chairs and exercise books.

Fr Odhiambo was born Jan 20, 1956, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1978. He was ordained a priest in 1987, and took final vow on 30 May 1993. He had worked in South Sudan for about 10 years, having served in Kenya and Tanzania previously.

He was buried at Mazzolari Teachers College (MTC) in Cueibet, the place where he was killed.
