Dear Prime Minister,
I write to you about the unjust arrest of the 83-year-old Jesuit priest Fr Stan Swamy. Fr Stan has been detained in prison for over 150 days and has not received appropriate care for his Parkinson’s Disease.
I ask that on your trip to India this April, that you personally ask Prime Minister Modi to immediately release Fr Stan on humanitarian and health grounds.
For 40 years, Fr Stan has campaigned to protect the rights of indigenous communities in India whose homes are threatened by government backed mining companies.
Fr Stan’s arrest was due to claims linking him to Maoist terrorist’s, something he vehemently denies. He was arrested on the same charge as 15 other human rights activists who have been silenced by the Indian Government.
I ask you to join the international response to his arrest and to prioritise human rights by raising Fr Stan with Prime Minister Modi and demanding his release on your trip to India.
Yours sincerely,[Your name]
