The Future of food in Zambia: A Climate Change warning

  • 7 August 2019

Jesuit Missions is delighted to welcome Fr Leonard Chiti SJ to the UK in September. Fr Leonard is the Provincial Superior of the Zambia-Malawi Province and former Coordinator of the Global Ignatian Advocacy Network and Director of the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection in Lusaka, Zambia.

Fr Leonard will speak at various Jesuit schools and parishes during his visit about the effects of climate change on food production in Zambia. He will look at ways in which Zambia can develop their farming methods in order to be more sustainable and adapt to the changing climate.

He says, “The 20th century farming techniques promised unlimited benefits. But now we are seeing the damage they are causing. The over-reliance on an abundance of water has meant this way of life is no longer sustainable. Farmers can no longer predict when the rains will come. This changing climate means that developing countries such as Zambia are facing serious food shortages.”

Developing countries such as Zambia often rely on local agriculture for both employment and food supply meaning that changes in climate can have a huge effect on the economic status of the country. In recent years we have seen an increase in climate related disasters such as Cyclone Idai which affected Southern Africa earlier this year.

Jesuit Missions is working with a number of partners in Zambia including Kasisi Agricultural training centre (KATC) which empowers rural communities improving their livelihoods through training and lobbying in appropriate technologies and sustainable organic agriculture. KATC works with small scale farmers promoting a style of agriculture which is sustainable and adaptable to the changes in climate.
