More than 3 million people have fled the devastating situation in Ukraine. This is quickly becoming one of the worst refugee crises in modern times.
Jesuit Missions is monitoring the situation closely with our partners in the Xavier Network and the Jesuits in Eastern Europe. We will be sending support where the need is greatest as the refugee crisis unfolds in Ukraine and its neighbouring countries, including shelter, medicine, and food.
Fr Marius, Director of Jesuit Refugee Service in Romania spoke to Xavier Network organisation Entreculturas about how they have been adapting to the needs of refugees in Romania:
“JRS Romania is not an emergency organisation so we’ve had to improvise emergency assistance in the form of food, clothes, bedding and medicine…and at the same time, we are providing housing and legal advice for those who want to seek asylum in Romania. You must consider that the yearly average number of asylum requests is around 6000, and we received more than 3000 in the first two weeks of the crisis. This is something that we have never had in Romania. We also have to provide safe transport within the country, such as towards the borders of other western countries. We have to offer safe transport to these victims of the war.”
Please donate, where you can, to aid the efforts of our Jesuit partners in Eastern Europe who find themselves confronted with this tragic crisis:
