Jesuit Missions is working with other Jesuit organisations in Europe and Africa to pressure governments involved in the COP29 climate talks to take the actions necessary to stop climate catastrophe.
COP stands for Conference of the Parties, which is basically a large-scale, high-level meeting of the countries that have ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This month’s talks, in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, are the 29th such conference – hence ‘COP29’.
COP29 is primarily about financing the necessary changes. The world’s wealthiest countries have produced the greatest quantities of planet-heating greenhouse gases, so they need to provide the necessary money for poorer countries, who have done the least to damage the climate, to deal with the loss and damage that has already occurred or is inevitable, and to transition away from fossil fuels. So far, they have provided a tiny fraction of what is necessary.
Jesuit organisations are calling on governments to make the UN’s Loss and Damage Fund effective, cancel debts so money can go to climate adaptation, and bring about a just energy transition. You can help by praying daily for the talks and writing to your national representative, supporting our demands.
We’ll be providing daily news summaries from the talks, which begin on 11 November and end on 22 November.
