On International Women’s Day (8 March), we honour the strength, wisdom, and leadership of the women at the heart of Jesuit Missions’ work; women who heal communities, guide our projects, and inspire hope every day.
From the beneficiaries whose resilience shapes lasting change, to the dedicated staff who lead with compassion and courage. Their stories remind us of what is possible when women are empowered, and that the future is being written every day through the strength and vision of its women.
Across our global projects, this spirit is alive in so many inspiring ways.
In South Sudan, the women of the Sowing Seeds project are learning vital agricultural skills to farm dry and arid land, transforming barren fields into sources of food, dignity, and stability for their families. Their testimonies speak of newfound confidence and the joy of feeding their communities through their own hands.
“When I was given the chance to learn new skills, I realised I wasn’t just changing my life, I was changing my children’s future too.”
– Female farmer in South Sudan

In India, women participating in our community programmes are gaining business and leadership skills that enable them to build small enterprises, support their families, and empower entire communities to thrive. Their journeys remind us of the transformative power of education and opportunity.
“[Women are] active managers of community resources – a critical dimension of female empowerment.”
– Comment on the ‘A Handful of Grain’ initiative
And in Madagascar, female advocates working with our partners have stepped onto the global stage at COP, lifting the voices of young people and championing the call to care for our common home. Their commitment to sustainability inspires the next generation to live responsibly and courageously in the face of environmental challenges.

These stories, and countless others, reflect the spirit of Proverbs 31. They remind us that women are not only participants in change, they are leaders of change. Their work, often done quietly and humbly, is worthy of honour, praise, and gratitude.
“She is clothed with strength and dignity…She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue…Honour her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”
– (Proverbs 31:25–26, 31)
At Jesuit Missions on International Women’s Day, we honour women whose hands, voices, and hearts help build a more just and compassionate world.
