Santa Marta 2026

First Conference on Transitioning away from Fossil Fuels

The first ever conference dedicated to transitioning away from fossil fuels will take place in Santa Marta, Colombia, from 24-29 April 2026.

What is it?

A platform to discuss the move away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy use, with the hope of creating sustainable societies and economies.

It follows conversations on this subject held at COP30 in Brazil last year – it will formally contribute to the COP30 Presidency’s plans on fossil fuel transition, but it is not seen as a replacement for the main UN conference.

Co-hosted by the governments of Colombia and the Netherlands (though held in Colombia), it is the first of its kind that focuses on the transition away from fossil fuel use.

Why is it happening?

Countries taking part want to build on the momentum around fossil fuel transition. It was felt that a standalone space for this would be most effective.

Participants will look to identify legal, economic, and social pathways to the phasing out of fossil fuels.

It will give a chance for all involved – from national governments and private sector representatives, to Indigenous rights’ groups and civil society members – to make their voices heard.

What has Jesuit Missions been doing?

Following our involvement with the Jesuits for Climate Justice campaign at COP30, we’ve been responding to key environmental issues which affect our partners around the world.

One of our volunteers, Diana Ospina, has interviewed several people who are likely to attend the Santa Marta conference – these will be published in a special e-booklet on this page in due course.
