A welcome message from our new Director

Jonathan Heard started at JM last month, and he is looking forward to engaging with those we work with at home and abroad.

Jonathan Heard, Director of Jesuit Missions

Following studying at university, I trained with the Jesuit Missions for a few weeks before serving on the missions with the Salesians in West Africa. That training, formation and experience served as the first link of my career, working for charities and with the Church and its agencies.

Joining Jesuit Missions 21 years later therefore comes with the obvious excitement of a new challenge and opportunity, but equally with a comfort and familiarity in the values and understanding – as well as clarity of purpose – that comes with working in an organisation like ours.

I therefore feel very privileged to take on the role of Director, succeeding Paul Chitnis who served the Missions for over 14 years.  Paul’s stewardship of the charity to meet the changing needs of the Jesuit family overseas, has created a vibrant organisation true to its Ignatian values.

I look forward to playing my part in ensuring that we remain fit for purpose and able to help those who find themselves in need throughout the world.

I was fortunate too to meet our partners from South Sudan, India, Madagascar and Guyana in London at the end of April, and the opportunities to hear their experiences. It was also a wonderful opportunity to meet a number of friends of Jesuit Missions and hearing the stories of your connection to the charity – some attending an event for the first time, others who have supported the missions for decades!

I look forward to meeting and getting to know more of you through my new role, and in the interim I ask you keep me in your prayers as I settle into the Jesuit family, and remember too those we serve and support overseas.
