Campaign
Justice at COP28
As Pope Francis explained in his recent apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum, “the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing breaking point”.
Global temperatures continue to rise, and instances of extreme weather are becoming more frequent and more destructive.
Those who are most affected by climate change, and upon whom the impact is greatest, are poor, marginalised communities in the Global South.
What’s more, as the Holy Father made clear, we are not acting quickly enough, nor strongly enough, when it comes to addressing climate change.
Inspired by the need to respond to such issues, Jesuit Missions is running a campaign, in collaboration with the Jesuit European Social Centre and the Jesuit Centre for Faith & Justice, in the run-up to and throughout the Conference of the Parties (COP28). The 28th edition of the Conference of the Parties will take place in Dubai between November 30 and December 12.
How can you get involved?
As part of our campaign, which launches on November 1, we will provide a host of resources which highlight the damage caused by climate change and what we can do to prevent this.
This will include daily prayers, updates from COP28, regular blog posts and a dedicated podcast series.
There will be documents such as a Guide to COP, a statement from the Ignatian family, a paper detailing our policy asks and a Spirituality Guide.
We’ll also provide specialist resources for schools and parishes, and a letter template for campaigners to fill in and send off to their local MP or MSP, urging them to commit to previously agreed environmental goals.
On Saturday December 9, we will be taking part in the COP28 Climate March in central London – all are welcome to join!
What else is there to know?
Our partner organisations for this campaign are based in East Africa, including agricultural projects in South Sudan that support mainly female farmers.
