When Lawrence Blackman created Crossing Paths, he wanted to offer a different perspective on the refugee experience.
Having worked with communities affected by poverty, migration and marginalisation in the UK and overseas, Lawrence had seen first-hand how easily people can become defined by labels rather than recognised as individuals with their own stories, talents and aspirations.
This inspired him to create Crossing Paths, a Refugee Week project that brings people together through art, storytelling and creativity.
“Refugees are often talked about in statistics or political debates,” Lawrence says. “I wanted to create a space where people could connect with one another as people and recognise the courage and resilience behind those stories.”
The project brought together artists, performers and contributors from a range of backgrounds to explore themes of identity, belonging and human connection.
Alongside the exhibition, Lawrence produced MAGAZINE, a publication that showcases creative work and personal stories that might otherwise go unheard.
For Lawrence, creativity can open up conversations that are difficult to have in other ways.
“Art allows people to encounter each other outside of politics,” he explains. “It can help us see our shared humanity and build understanding across cultures and experiences.”
That message resonates with the work of Jesuit Missions and our partners, who accompany communities affected by conflict, poverty and displacement around the world.
In South Sudan, for example, Jesuit Missions supports projects that help refugees rebuild their lives through education, livelihoods and community development.
By helping people see beyond headlines and stereotypes, projects like Crossing Paths encourage the empathy and solidarity that make this work possible.
